Why take part

  • What is the money I raise used for?

Every hour of every day, someone in Australia is diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. Every two hours, someone dies from one of these blood cancers.

The money you raise will go towards research, which is needed to find better treatments and cures for leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Your donations and sponsorship will also support patients and their families when they need it most, providing leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma patients with a free home-away-from-home near hospital during their treatment. It will also mean we can transport them to appointments and provide as much practical assistance and emotional support as we can, all free of charge.

  • How many people are affected by blood cancers?

Around 40,000 Australian families face the challenges of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders every day. And every 46 minutes, another person is diagnosed.

More than 57,000 Australians are expected to develop blood cancer in the next 5 years.  And although survival rates are improving, sadly blood cancer is Australia’s second biggest cause of cancer death. Clearly there is more work to be done.

  • How do people get leukaemia?

Factors that may affect leukaemias development are not clear but may include a person’s genetic history, exposure to intense radiation and certain chemicals such as benzene and viruses like the Human T-Cell Leukaemia virus.
