About the event

  • About Light The Night

Light the Night is a campaign to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and to raise awareness of leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.  Thousands of people are gathering at Light the Night events across Australia to shine lanterns of love, life or hope to support people with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Each lantern colour has a special meaning:

    ■ Shine a gold 'Love Light' to remember a loved one.

    ■ Shine a white 'Life Light' to reflect on your life with blood cancer.

    ■ Shine a blue 'Hope Light' to give hope and support.

Enjoy the entertainment, food stalls and hear inspirational stories leading up to the moment when we Light the Night by lifting our lanterns high into the air, followed by a gentle scenic walk together.

At most Light the Night events we have ambassadors who tell their story about how they've been touched by blood cancers. Many have lost someone, many share the story of their diagnosis and treatment and celebrate they are surviving.

We ask you to sign up, and ask friends, family and work colleagues to join you on this special night.

To give hope, we also set a fundraising goal for Light the Night. We ask as many supporters as possible to collect donations beforehand. This year Light the Night aims to raise over $1.5million to improve the quality of life for patients and their families here and now and give hope for a brighter future by funding the work of Australia's best researchers.

  • Is this the same as the Light the Night concert?

Light the Night is also the name of a benefit concert held in Sydney each October to raise money for leukaemia research.

Now in its seventh year, the concert has raised in excess of $220,000 for leukaemia research.

In previous years some of Australia's most talented artists including Human Nature, Tim Campbell, Anthony Callea, Lior, Katie Noonan and Emma Pask, to name a few, have performed - this year's cast will be no exception. For an up to date list of performers visit the concert’s website at www.lightthenight.com.au

  • Will food and drink be available?

Check with your local Light the Night coordinator what refreshments will be available at your walk location.

  • Who do you mean by ‘angels’ in our advertising?

‘Angels’ are the special people who help us –  carers, mothers, husbands, nurses, friends and families.

They brighten our lives with a ready smile and helping hand.  We’ve had Light the Night teams call themselves angels because they see themselves as supporters who are doing a good thing.

So we’re calling on these special people to be an angel by helping us Light the Night and create a brighter future for people with blood cancers.

  • Why is there a $20 registration fee this year?

Light the Night helps to create a brighter future by raising funds for research, and free services to support Australian families.

It was great to see so many people register last year and raise money beforehand - it was a big fundraising effort from many of our supporters.  However many more people simply turned up on the night and we only received $4 on average from them, which didn't cover the cost of their balloon.

This year we have replaced balloons with beautiful new lanterns which you can take home and keep shining through the year.

We are asking for $20 from everyone who wants to come, and to keep it affordable for families, children 12 and under are free.

We are still encouraging everyone to fundraise on top and we'll only send fundraising kits to the people who do. This saves the Leukaemia Foundation money which can be used to fund more research and free services to support our Vision to Cure and Mission to Care.
